Google to release an OS
Wednesday, July 8, 2009 | Permalink

This is an interesting piece of news. According to the official Google blog they are working on a new OS called "Google Chrome OS". This is excellent news. We seriously lack competition in the OS market where Windows dominates. I have always wanted Apple to release Mac OS X for PC. I'm pretty sure it would be quite successful and be able to give Microsoft a run for the money. But so far they haven't been willing to do so, because they still want to sell their hardware at premium prices. I know it's possible to run Mac OS X on a PC if you're willing to hack around and have the right hardware, but the people doing that are of course a very tiny fraction of the market.

It'll be interesting to see what Google's OS will be like. From the description so far it sounds mostly like a Linux kernel and a browser, which to me doesn't sound like an actual OS, but more like a customized Linux distribution slimmed down for netbooks. But we'll see what it really is when it's released. I for one hope that we'll see a real competitor on this market.

Yep, I couldn't agree more! Let's see what Google has to say

But, if I am not wrong, isn't this announced OS only for NetBooks?

Well, "initially" anyway.

Well, being that it's just another linux distro, it should run on anything.

at the moment it's vaporware... so it's little more than just a chance to stir some shit with MS.

It's curious that they haven't even an beta or alpha to show, yet have generated so much media hype over their simple blog posting.

It's also curious why no one seems worried about the massive amount of personal and surfing data google has amassed. Just read the EULA for android and search page. It will be the same for their vaporware netbook OS.... yet no one seems disturbed? Where are all those privacy nuts who decried Microsoft's much less intrusive EULA?

Well, Google is bound to be another Microsoft soon enough. It's just a matter of time before they too become an "evil corporation". They aren't exactly angels, even though they may try to portray themselves as good, and so far fairly successfully, but as have been shown with their deal with the Chinese regime for instance it's pretty obvious that they don't have any higher moral standards than anyone else.

Konquerer is a browser and a file manager... linux is an OS. Realistically, why create your own OS from scratch... me, I'd start from BSD if I could hit the coding standards.

With PyJson and Javascript, scripting languages will be fast and flexible.

Why start a new OS... why deal with the patent headaches?
