As I touched on briefly in my piracy
post on piracy, we live in a globalized world and regionalizing digital products makes absolutely no sense in this time and age. This is not something that the average broadcast corporation understands, but some do. Or did. It's with great disappointment I see that Comedy Central has now implemented geofiltering, the perhaps most ironic and moronic kind of technology ever invented, so now my favorite show The Daily Show with John Stewart is no longer "available" in my "area". What they are hoping to achieve with this is beyond my comprehension. What the result is going to be is obvious though, their shows will get a smaller audience, and those who care enough will pirate it. And the pirated versions are of course stripped from all the commercials, the bread and butter of broadcasting corporations.
Oh well, in another 10-15 years the average CEO will be of my generation. By then I hope this kind of nonsense finally comes to an end.

I believe the reasoning here is that, because you cannot buy the products that are being advertised on the online version of the show, it is no longer cost-effective to broadcast to your area. I.e., you are costing them money for the bandwidth, and they have no hope of recouping that cost through advertising.

Plenty of the products advertized are available globally. Broadcasting ads across the globe certainly beats staying nationally. It's extra value for those who buy the ads. I have a hard time believing this is a profitable move.

They show it late at night here too, but usually too late for me to watch it, and at different times every night just to make it more inconvenient, plus that it's last week's episodes. They put out a statement saying this was by request of licensors, but if they allow it through to Australia despite someone licensing it there that sounds a bit fishy.
In any case, with Hotspot Shield I'm able to watch it anyway. It doesn't seem to work on Vista 64bit though, so I have to use my laptop.
