"For too long, many nations, including my own, tolerated, even excused, oppression in the Middle East in the name of stability. Oppression became common, but stability never arrived. We must take a different approach. We must help the reformers of the Middle East as they work for freedom, and strive to build a community of peaceful, democratic nations."

New demo
Monday, September 5, 2005 | Permalink

Finally a new demo! There hasn't been much activity here for a while, but now I have a new demo here at last.
Lots of people have asked for a long time why I don't have any HDR demo on my site. There's no particular reason for that, I just hadn't bothered writing one. But now I've covered that as well. Of course, it's complete with the butter-on-my-glasses blur effect that has come to characterize HDR and actually to some extent get confused with HDR.
Anyway, the main selling point of this demo is that it doesn't go the lazy route and uses FP16 just because "that's HDR" as is a common misconcept out there. Instead it's using a DXT1/L16 combination that's faster and uses less memory space and can be filtered all the way down to R300. The main render target is FP16 though.

Anyway, enough talking. Now go grab it.

@ Humus and Nitro
Nvidia does support rendering to NPOT TEXTURE_2D with FBO. I've used this feature without incident with both int and float NPOT textures on every nvidia driver release with FBO support. It is also true that nvidia only supports 24-bit depth attachments, so you may want to switch to 24-bit for compatability purposes.

I have only gfx5200 and rendering to npot 2d textures doesn't work, but I can use them for texturing - software fallback (very sloooow). I tried nvemulate and rendering to npot 2d textures didn't work so I assumed this doesn't work at all. Probably this is only not done in software.

Nice demo, but like SUNSH I get a strange view after switching to fullscreen (totally blurred and like looking after a totally scratched glass).

I have a 9800 Pro 256MB newest catalyst driver.

Close and rerun doesn't help to fix the problem.

Switching back to windowed-mode can (sometimes) fix this behavior.

I will try to get an screenshot...

Awesome demo, Humus.
Sometimes i also get these bugs like Heady (ati mobility x700 128mb, cat 5., but after deleting your registry entries and restart your program they are gone.

Does NOT work on my 6600 + 78.01. On the screen is only FPS value and nothing more ;o(

It works well on my 6800ultra.
But it does look butt uggly if you use to little blur.
To the rest, the 6800 card should have full support for both NPOT and FBO since atleast 71.xx (NPOT was supported by the 6x00 release drivers).
